Mason Greenwood to start against Southampton

With Anthony Martial injured, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood could make his first start of the season against Southampton in the weekend.

Manchester United don’t particularly have much to rely on, with Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku off to Inter, as part of Solskjaer’s clean up duty.

Martial – who has scored twice since the new season – is not expected back in the squad until after the International break. With Ole now placing his trust on 17-year-old Mason Greenwood, as they face Southampton in an early weekend game.

“Mason is not used to playing as little as he is at the moment.” said Solskjaer at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning.

“He is used to playing every week for the reserves or the Under-18s, now he’s coming on for half-an-hour here and there.

“He’s not expected to play five games in a row of course, he’s cover and an option behind Anthony and Marcus.”

He continued: “I’m trusting Marcus, Anthony and Mason Greenwood to be our centre forwards.

“We’ve got loads of options and for me it is time for our boys to feel the pressure. It is something which we are looking forward.”

Alongside Anthony Martial, left back Luke Shaw is also expected to miss the fixture against Southampton.

Solskjaer confirmed that deals are being worked on for defenders Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian to leave Old Trafford before the European window closes. Leaving Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot as Shaw’s temporal replacements.
