Seems the Catholic supreme pontiff is apparently a football fan, and he has aired his view on Messi’s sacrilegious “God” claims by worldwide fans.
The talent showcased by the Argentine is sometimes impossible to imagine, and once again the talisman delivered, as Barcelona cruised to victory in the weekend.
Pope Francis admits it’s a joy to watch Lionel Messi play. However he condemned the idea of addressing the Argentine as “God”. An expression which he says is rightly reserved for only one true Being.
Quizzed on the Spanish television show Salvados on La Sextawhether on Messi’s sacrilegious consideration by many as “God”, Pope Francis said: “In theory, it’s a sacrilege.
“You can’t say it and I don’t believe it. I think people say ‘he is God’ just as they say ‘I adore you’. You have to adore only God.
“It’s expressions that people use. This is a god with the ball on the pitch. It’s a popular way that people have of expressing themselves.
“Of course, it is a joy [to watch Messi play]. But he is not God.”
