Chiellini has accused Cristiano Ronaldo’s former employers [Real Madrid] of influencing the result of Ballon d’or award last year. With Lionel Messi now one above the talisman.
Lionel Messi rightly beat his long-time rival and new boy Virgil van Dijk to the Ballon d’Or this year. For some reason, the Argentine’s rival fans have accepted his status as the winner this time. But pointed accusing fingers at last year’s deluded ceremony.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric lifted the award in the past year, despite Cristiano Ronaldo undeniably the better player and most suitable candidate for the award.
The midfielder subsequently became the first-ever Ballon d’Or winner not to be nominated for the next year’s edition, to further raise questions over what exactly went down last year.
While Lionel Messi won his sixth Ballon d’Or, Cristiano Ronaldo would pick up a trophy of his own, opting to skip the ceremony in Paris to instead pick up a Serie A player of the year at the Gran Gala awards.
Speaking at that ceremony in Milan, teammate Chiellini aired his views on the Ballon d’Or, admitting Lionel Messi has rightly won the award this time but accused Real Madrid of depriving Cristiano Ronaldo the chance to lift his sixth last year, in favor of a less deserving winner in Luka Modric.
“It’s ok that Messi has won the Ballon d’Or this year,” Chiellini said. “The real theft was last year, Real Madrid decided that Cristiano should not win the Ballon d’Or. It was really strange.
“Cristiano won the Champions League, [but I suppose] by that logic Van Dijk should have won it this year.
“Maybe last year Griezmann, Pogba or Mbappe should have won for doing extraordinary things at the World Cup. Modric made no sense.”
A constant repeat of last year’s uncharacteristic decision could see the Ballon d’Or lose its meaning. But for now, Lionel Messi is the winner, and rightly deserves so, for his efforts last year with Barcelona.
