Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi, has placed domestic success in the La Liga as more important than the prestigious Champions League silverware.

Messi admits the Champions League is ‘something special’, having won it himself on several occasions ( four times ).

However, the 32-year-old – who has won the La Liga even more, on ten occasions – would place it ahead of both the Champions League and Copa Del Rey.

“The Champions League is something special for us and we want to win it every year,” Messi said after receiving his Golden shoe award on Wednesday.

“Although we know La Liga is the most important one because that will lead you to be competitive in the Champions League and the Spanish Cup

“It’s difficult when you are not doing well in La Liga and trying to do well in the Champions League.

“It’s true we always speak about the Champions League but we don’t forget about La Liga and the Spanish Cup because we are Barcelona and we want to win all titles.”

Lionel Messi and Barcelona are eyeing a third straight La Liga title this season. However, the Catalans would first have to weave their way past Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid, who sit top of the La Liga with a two-point advantage over them.

Barcelona return to action following the international break with a fixture away to Eibar. The Catalans then face Slavia Praha in a midweek Champions League fixture. Before heading for an all-important El Clasico against biggest rivals Real Madrid.
