Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac admitted, his side were no match for visitors Liverpool, as the Merseyside reds cruised to victory and a Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of the German giants.
Goals from Sadio Mane (26, 84) and Virgil Van Dijk (69) ensured Joel Matip’s 39th minute own goal meant little to nothing, as Jurgen Klopp once again orchestrated a brilliant switch to earn his side one of two quarter-finals spots. And Niko Kovac accepted his side had no option but to lose against a brilliant Liverpool side.
Speaking to Skysports after the game, Kovac said:
“We had a strong opponent and we have to congratulate Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
“They were better in these two matches and we deserved to lose. The opponent attacked us very high and left no spaces, that made it difficult for us.
“On top of that it was not our best day. Liverpool are a top team in Europe and they showed us our limits.”
“You saw after the second goal how much quality they have.
“We still have two titles to fight for. We’re top in the Bundesliga and we’re still in the cup. Our goal is to win both of these competitions.”
Bayern Munich now turn their full attention to the domestic competition, in hope to hold off Borussia Dortmund through to the end of the season. With both sides, currently level on points on the League table.
