Real Madrid: Dull derby draw, a huge positive for Zidane - Zinedine Zidane, real madrid

Not by the Real Madrid standard, but for perhaps a team that struggled to breath just a fortnight ago. Zinedine Zidane is coming good so far at the Bernabeu.

The Los Blancos left the Wanda Metropolitano unscathed by Atletico Madrid on Saturday, and have a few notable positives to take home from a not particularly exciting game.

Zidane’s ship is still in the workshop, but the Santiago Bernabeu for the moment are quite satisfied it sails at least. With the Frenchman having secured a place at the top of the League table to keep the pressure at bay.

Real didn’t waver for the night. And maybe not in the past, but for a team that has spent most of the past two seasons, having to stare at their greatest rivals from a considerable lower vantage point, that’s major progress.

The last time Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid met, was a pre-season friendly in New Jersey. The latter coming out on top, a surprising 7-3 to cast doubts over Zinedine Zidane’s potential.

It’s been three matches now, after Real Madrid’s horrific 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint Germain, and apparently, the manager has found a way to keep the lots together.

A 1-0 win at Sevilla, a 2-0 win over Osasuna and now a goalless draw against fierce rivals Atletico to keep the manager away from Florentino Perez’s swinging axe for the time being.

Real Madrid sit top with 15 points in their first seven games and are only threatened by Real Sociedad who could take lead if they find a way past Sevilla on Sunday.

It’s only a nibble of what they used to be. But Zinedine Zidane would be happy with the job so far, as the manager looks to Tuesday’s Champions League encounter with Club Brugge at the Santiago Bernabeu.
