Center back Upgrade: Emery wants world-class for Arsenal

Unai Emery has his eye set on a world-class center back recruitment in the summer, as the manager looks to transform his Arsenal side.

According to reports Emery’s target list consists of several big names including Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Kurt Zouma and Djene Dakonam. None would come cheaply, and Emery is left in a dilemma to address issues in his current squad.

The manager is hoping to provide a center piece, much like Jurgen Klopp did at Liverpool, when he signed Virgil Van Dijk for £75m. However, Arsenal aren’t economically buoyant as the Merseyside reds, with TheSun revealing, ‘Emery has been warned that he will have to work with a budget of around £40million if Arsenal fail to qualify for the Champions League.’

The Gunners are now looking to sell several stars including Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Shkodran Mustafi to fund the manager’s squad rebuild. But will face stern tests, with two targets Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire also on Manchester United’s radar, and the Gunners unable to compete financially with the red devils who are prepared to spare a minimum £200m for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer.

Emery’s best chance, would be a Champions League qualification, with the North London club’s best and most viable option, coming in this season’s Europa League – where they face Valencia in the semi finals.
