Lionel Messi was delighted to win the Best FIFA Men’s Player award for the first time, revealing he now intends on helping Barcelona correct their slow start to the season.

The Best FIFA Men’s Player award was Lionel Messi‘s first since rebranded in 2016. And surprisingly, his first major individual honour since claiming his fifth Ballon d’Or in 2015.

However, having returned to the fold, following an impressive individual 2018/2019 season. The Argentine is now focused on helping Barcelona return to form, having missed out from the start through injury.

“It has been a long time without winning an individual prize,” Messi said.

“It is an award that I have for the first time and it is good to have it.”

Lionel Messi has made just two appearances from the bench, as the player continues to slowly walk his way back to the team. Barca are already way off the mark, with the Catalans four points adrift table leaders Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona have made their worst start to a La Liga season since 1994-95. However, with Lionel Messi back, and a morale boosting trophy. The Argentine has no doubt the team can and will improve.

“We’ve started badly and are struggling to create play and chances. It’s just the start, but we have to respond now,” Messi said.

“There’s no more time and we have to improve a lot, we’re aware of this. It’s a team thing.

“I have no doubts that we’ll improve.”
