Barcelona to face Atleti battles for Matthijs de Ligt

Atletico Madrid are reportedly considering a summer move for 19-year-old Barça target Matthijs de Ligt.

Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed their interest in the Ajax center back, having sealed a move for teammate Frenkie De Jong in the winter for €75 million.

However, the Catalans won’t have it easy in the summer, with Atletico Madrid willing to splash the cash to sign De Ligt as replacement for Lucas Hernandez who could quit the Wanda Metropolitano in the summer.

Bayern Munich were obviously interested in signing Lucas in the January transfer window, but a deal failed to materialize as Atletico Madrid remained reluctant to let the defender leave. The Blaugranas are reportedly set to return in the summer, and are likely to meet Atleti’s €80 million release clause for the center back.

Should Lucas Hernandez complete a move to the Allianz arena, Atletico Madrid would surely be left short at the back. And the Spanish side are now reportedly prioritizing a move for Matthijs de Ligt as the next best replacement in the summer.

Matthijs, has been sensational so far this season, and was once again impressive in the Champions League, as Ajax laid waste of reigning Champions Real Madrid in a 4-1 victory at Santiago Bernabau.

The Ajax captain has been apparently efficient upfront, as he has been in defence. With the center back contributing to four goals and two assists in 39 appearances for the club in the season.

De Ligt is currently tied to the Dutch side until 2021, and is bound to cost a fortune. As Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars is well aware of his abilities, admitting “De Ligt can play easily for any of the six best teams in the world.”
