It wasn’t a day to remember for Everton and Son Heung-min who watched on as midfielder Andre Gomes was stretched off, following a dislocated fracture on his right ankle.
Gomes was brought down by Son, but replays show it was probably his collision with defender Serge Aurier that oversaw the gruesome event.
The Portuguese midfielder was quickly treated by the team’s medical staff, and then rushed to the hospital. With Everton later confirming he would undergo surgery on Monday.
In a statement from the club, it says: “Andre Gomes will undergo surgery tomorrow (Monday, November 4) after sustaining an ankle injury in today’s game with Tottenham Hotspur.
“The Portugal international was stretchered from the pitch during the second half of the game and taken straight to Aintree Hospital by ambulance accompanied by members of the Everton medical team.
“After undergoing hospital tests, it was confirmed he had suffered a fracture-dislocation to his right ankle. The club will provide further updates in due course”
Following the injury, Tottenham star Son Heung-min looked absolutely devasted, as he was consoled by Everton players who felt it was only a coincidence, and that the star never had such horrific intentions.
Everton manager Marco Silva agrees, saying that a high profile player like Son, would never play with such intentions.
“We have to be fair to Son. All the respect to Son. Every time I look to him, and Andre, both of them we can put as high-level football players,’ Everton boss Marco Silva told beIN SPORTS.
“High-level characters as well. Even if I don’t know Son personally, he’s a very good player, I don’t believe he did that with bad intention. No, it was a tackle at that moment but not with bad intention for sure. He doesn’t want that for sure.
“He’s so sad at this moment, in the dressing room, because a football player like Son does not want to do that, I am 100% sure he doesn’t want to do something with that intention.”
The Everton manager insists Andre Gomes will return stronger after his injury, admitting it was a tough moment, but reveals the midfielder will have all the support he needs to recover.
“It was a really tough moment for us, forgetting the game and result.” Marco Silva said in the post-match.
“Andre Gomes will have all the support he needs from us.
“It is a serious injury and I am 100 percent sure Andre will become stronger as a footballer player and stronger as a man, he is a fantastic lad and professional and all the support he needs, he will have from us.
“Our players are sad now, it is a tough moment in our dressing room, but the spirit we showed after that moment was good. It was the toughest moment for us this season.”
