Will Smith Says Divorce Was The Worst Thing In His Life?
For a special Father’s Day episode, Will joined his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith on her Facebook Watch show, Red Table Talk. In an intimate conversation with his wife, he opened up about his past relationships, his rapport with his eldest son Trey and much more. “With Sheree and with Trey, that was a challenging time. Divorce was the worst thing in my adult life, divorce was the ultimate failure for me,” the Academy Award-winning actor said.
What Happened With Will and Sheree?
Will Smith and Sheree Zampino tied the knot in 1992 and soon after had their son, Trey. However, the couple divorced in 1995, when Trey was only two years old. He also talked about the struggles he and Sheree faced in the marriage as well as with raising Trey. “She needed me to father the way she wanted Trey fathered, and I’m not that guy. I’m not the parent-teacher meeting, throwing baseballs with the kids [guy]”, Smith recalled.
Will Smith Now: A Better Father
As the interview progressed, Will opened about his early struggles shaping him into the father and husband he is today. He disclosed how he felt the real weight of parenting when he brought baby Trey home at the young age of 24. He also recalled the memories of his father, Will Smith Sr. who had ‘quite a temper’ and would often physically hurt Will as well as his mother. “He showed me the things I would absolutely, positively never do to my children.”, said an emotional Will Smith.
