On May 25, 2020, a Minneapolis police office, Derek Chauvin, restrained an African-American, George Floyd, to death. He handcuffed George (face down on the street) and then pressed his knee on his neck. Other officers held back the people who were trying to help.
Floyd died due to cardiac arrest caused by being restrained.
As the news got out, people came out in support of Floyd and started protests on the streets of America. The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter flooded the social media with people taking sides regarding the matter.
Leslie Remond, president,NAACP, said, “The cruel display of the state-sanctioned murder that took place in Minneapolis is yet another repugnant show of violence by the police. The actions of the officers involved are inexcusable and warrant swift consequences. Their actions represent a dangerous precedent set forth by the racist, xenophobic, and prejudicial sentiment in our society against Black people. We witnessed a violation of our human rights, and we must hold all involved criminally accountable for the death of Mr. Floyd.”
